Bath locovores will have the opportunity to prove their muscle when the Bath Farmers Market opens on May 2, 2009 in Waterfront Park from 8:30 am until noon. The market will be open every Saturday through October 31. “Our local market is really expanding,” according to market manager, Karen Sparrow. “This year we have Ali Shongole from Fresh Start Farms in Lisbon. He will be adding some ethnic Somali veggies to the regular Maine mix of offerings. Also new to the market is Cathe Mrkunas from Passion Flower Farms in West Bath. Her specialties are heirloom flowers and bouquets. Marjie Hawkes will also join the summer market.”
In addition to herbs, fruits and vegetables, the Bath Farmers Market has several organic meat and poultry growers: Goranson Farms and Mainely Poultry have fresh chickens. Kelley Brothers Farm features fresh grass fed beef, and Corner Stone Farm has organic pork. Debbie and Drew Hahn will return with their mouth watering Blue Velvet and City of Ships cheese, and Borealis Bread and Beryls’ Pastries will also be on board.
The market is an opportunity for locals and visitors alike to support sustainable agriculture by buying locally. The big plus is getting to know the people who are actually growing your food. For information regarding the market, contact Karen Sparrow at 582-2213.
Long known as the “City of Ships” Bath, Maine finds its soul and identity in shipbuilding. From its architecture and cultural offerings to its urban downtown, Bath’s shipbuilding roots define its character.
